Remorseful villainess Alice Sheldon
Alice Sheldon (Samantha Sloyan) is a tragic villainess from "Warriors and Guardians," episode 2.04 of The Rookie (airdate October 20, 2019).
Alice was introduced as a homeless transient who was being harassed by a pair of teenage boys, who were shown firing paintballs at her tent. Officers Angela Lopez and Jackson West arrived at the scene, and after the former arrested the pair, she went up to Alice, who introduced herself but mainly wanted to be left alone. Angela's sympathy for Alice led her to dig into her past, and it was revealed that Alice was a chemistry teacher at UCLA; having qualfied for tenure ten years prior to the episode's events. Angela and Jackson both wondered what could have caused Alice's downfall, though when they returned to the site, they saw that Alice disappeared.
A photo of a young woman was found at the site, and it was uncovered that the woman--named Katrin Ardoux--was the victim of a hit and run in 2009, which left her permanently paralyzed. This led both officers to realize that Alice was the hit and run driver, and later on, Alice was frantically searching her cart for the photo, only for Angela and Jackson to arrive and show her Katrin's photo. Alice's past was revealed by Angela; she was (most likely) driving late and exhausted when she struck what she thought was an animal. However, Alice heard about Katrin and realized that she ran her over, but she stayed hidden and masked her actions as a vehicular villainess, though she spent the ten years that passed carrying extreme guilt.
After several denials and claims to not know Katrin, Alice confessed and expressed her guilt and remorse over what happened, which resulted in her becoming a recluse. After Alice's confession, Jackson handcuffed and arrested Alice for the hit and run.
