Evil author Stephanie May

Stephanie May (Annie Briggs) is the main villainess from "Murder They Wrote," episode 5.05 of Private Eyes (airdate August 5, 2021).

Stephanie May is an author of Victorian steampunk detective novels, and she was one of many authors at a convention for crime writers, which was attended by Matt Shade and Angie Everett--who were invited by fellow private investigator turned crime writer (as well as Angie's boyfriend) Tex. The convention's population also included husband-and-wife writers Percy and Helen Voss, though just as the group was about to participate in a murder mystery game, Helen (who wasn't playing the victim) suddenly collapsed and died.

It was later revealed that Helen was poisoned, and regarding suspects, Eve Harrington was the primary person of interest due to rat poison being found in her room. Percy was also believed to have killed Helen, as it was uncovered that there were problems in the marriage, however, Percy was later found dead of an apparent suicide, with a note containing a confession to killing Helen. The gang of investigators believed that Percy was actually murdered, and during the episode's climax, Zoe Chow uncovered a video of Percy announcing that he was releasing The Chesterfield Murders, a novel set in the Victorian period, which was Stephanie's specialty.

The discovery led to Stephanie being suspected, but Tex stated that she and Percy never knew each other. However, that fact ended up actually revealing Stephanie as a murderess, and it was at the convention that Stephanie arrived and asked about the manuscript for the novel. In response, the trio detailed Stephanie's connection to Percy, which began with Stephanie's last novel being panned to the point that she had to return her pay, and regarding the manuscript, Percy ghost-wrote it for Stephanie, who denied it and claimed that it was all hers.

Percy's ghost-writing was part of a murderous arrangement; he wanted Helen dead, and enlisted Stephanie to kill her in exchange for his services. The villainess committed the murder, using rat poison to kill Helen, but once Percy realized he had a best-seller on his hands, he reneged on his promise to hand the manuscript to Stephanie. Out of anger, the evil Stephanie poisoned Percy and type the suicide note to set him up as a guilty killer, and after the villainess denied the accusations, Danica Powers arrived and informed Stephanie that her wiping the prints off the typewriter was her undoing. At that moment, Stephanie was handcuffed and arrested.
