Sonja Sterling

The evil Sonja Sterling

Sonja Sterling (Jessica Steen) is the main recurring villainess from the final three episodes of Republic of Doyle's third season.

Introduction[]

Sonja Sterling is a retired police officer and a former trainee of Malachy Doyle, as Sonja was a rookie during Malachy's time on the force. Her first appearance came in the antepenultimate episode, "Live Wire," when she arranged a meeting with Malachy regarding the murder of their colleague, Staff Sergeant Raymond Reese. After Sgt. Leslie Bennett showed Malachy a photo of Sonja with Reese, Malachy met with Sonja in the episode's final scenes, with Sonja raising her gun before embracing Malachy and voicing his elation over seeing him. Their meeting continued in the following episode (the penultimate episode), "Con, Steal, Love," which had Sonya revealing that she was working a desk job for the FBI in the province of Ontario, and that she and Reese met the night before his murder. Sonja asked Malachy to help her find out who killed Reese, with Malachy agreeing to do so.

Heel Turn[]

Malachy later informed Sonja that a man known simply as Achilles was connected to Reese, with Sonja claiming that Achillies was an investment banker with a cocaine addiction, though she and Reese used him as an informant. The pair planned to confront Achilles, and afterwards, Malachy introduced Sonja to Jake Doyle, and later Rose Miller, before Sonja watched Malachy engage in a meeting with Achilles. Later on, Sonja phoned Malachy and informed him that someone saw Reese on the night of his murder, after which she arranged a meeting with Malachy without revealing any more details.

The meeting took place in the episode's final scenes, with Sonja informing Malachy that she would talk to the witness alone before asking for her gun, with a reluctant Malachy acquiescing. In a twist, the "witness" was revealed as Achilles (whose real name was Johnny Adler), and in addition, Sonja turned heel by shooting Johnny to death at the episode's end, while setting up Malachy to be accused of murder.

Everything was revealed in the season finale, "Under Pressure": Sonja, Reece, and Johnny were conspirators in a plan to steal over $2 million in gold from the Federal Government, with Sonja as the villainous mastermind. However, Reece decided to back out of the plan and informed Johnny that he would do so, adding that he would never reveal Johnny's location to Sonja. The meeting between Sonja and Reece was regarding the latter backing out, and when Reece refused to give up Johnny's location, the villainess shot and killed Reece. She later manipulated Malachy into getting in touch with Johnny, leading to Sonya killing Johnny as well, and later planting a bomb in her car in an attempt to kill Malachy. Her first appearance in the episode saw her fire at Malachy as the gold was being transferred, and after Jake, Malachy, and Des managed to intercept the gold, Sonja contacted Malachy and arranged a meeting--only for Jake to appear instead.

Climax and Arrest[]

Heel Sonja Gun

Jake confronted Sonja with her crimes, only for the villainess to arrogantly deny everything before demanding Malachy's presence and locating the bug on Jake's person. After Jake and Des grill one of the guards regarding a meeting between him and Sonja, Malachy and Rose went to the warehouse and waited for Sonja, who later arrived and ended up knocked out with a plank by Rose. The villainess later revealed the truth to Malachy: she had developed addictions to drugs and gambling and owed money to unsavory people, leading to Sonja's heel turn and plans to steal the gold.

In addition, Sonja stated that she killed Reese and Johnny for backing out, claiming that she was in too deep, after which Rose stated that she would pay for everything she had done to them. However, the evil Sonja ominously informed the couple that they would let her leave and ordered them to get her the gold, adding that she planted a second bomb but refused to reveal the location until she got what she wanted and left. Malachy phoned Jake, who figured out that Sonja had planted a second bomb, which was later found by Christian Doyle inside the office.

Jake and Des disarmed the bomb, and the episode's climax saw the former distribute the bomb to Sonja, who later revealed that she planted a third bomb, which detonated inside Jake's car. After Des informed Jake about Sonja's getaway plan, Jake confronted Sonja just as she was about to get on the plane, with the maniacal villainess pointing a gun at Jake. After Sonja ripped out a wire from Jake, she lashed out over Reese backing out of her plan, while claiming that the murders and framing Malachy wasn't supposed to happen. It was at that moment that Jake revealed that he had a second wire, after which the pair struggled over the gun, which went off and struck Des (non-fatally). Finally defeated, Sonja was arrested (off-screen) for her various crimes.

Personality[]

  • As shown during the three-episode trilogy (especially after turning heel in the end of "Con, Steal, Love"), Sonja was portrayed as a manipulator and a deceiver, as well as a greedy and morally corrupt villainess. "Under Pressure" showed the immense depths of Sonja's heel persona, as her willingness to attempt to kill not only Malachy Doyle, but his family, established her as a deranged and maniacal madwoman bent on getting away with her crimes and taking down literally anyone in her way.

Trivia[]

  • Jessica Steen also played villainess Myra Teal on Monk, as well as evil scientist Sara Stanton on Mutant X.
