The evil Mrs. Reynold
Mrs. Reynold is the main villainess from a short story released by Because It's Interesting on August 29, 2021.
Introduction[]
Mrs. Reynold was introduced as the wife of James Reynold Sr. and the mother of their only son, James "Jimmy" Reynold Jr.
The story's opening established that Jimmy was very close to his father as a child and had all sorts of fun together, while his mother was often strict toward her son. James was later diagnosed with cancer and as he was laying on his deathbed, he gave his watch to his son, originally claiming that it was from his own father, but revealing that he was lying; his father wasn't really close to him, and he vowed that when he had a son of his own, he wouldn't be an absentee father.
James passed away when Jimmy was only 7 years old, and two years later, Mrs. Reynold remarried with a man named Arnold and introduced him to Jimmy (now a 9-year-old child) as his stepfather. However, Arnold was the opposite of James, often expressing frustration and usually telling his stepson to study, while the villainess often spent a lot of time with her second husband. Mrs. Reynold later announced that she was pregnant, which drew happiness from Jimmy (who was later surprised to see his mother building a crib in his room). Mrs. Reynold stated that she couldn't have the baby in their room because Arnold wouldn't be able to sleep, and also claimed that Jimmy couldn't stay with his future half-sibling because he would be disturbed, leading the wicked woman to send her son to sleep in the basement.
Jimmy voiced his displeasure over being in the basement, but in response to his suggestion about sleeping in the guest room, Mrs. Reynold stated that if he did, the guest room would be ruined and any guests would be inconvenienced, while telling her son to "try to understand." Jimmy ended up acquiescing, and after his mother gave birth to his half-brother, Archie, he often played with the newborn, only for Arnold to voice his dismay. Jimmy was often tasked with sitting, while continuing to understand that the family was financially struggling, resulting in the protagonist never asking for things. When the family had enough money, Mrs. Reynold told her son that she and Arnold were heading to the movies and taking Archie with them, leaving Jimmy in the house on his own.
Even when Jimmy became a teenager, Mrs. Reynold continued to order him to do chores to please Arnold, and later on, the boy was visited by his "uncle" Richard (who was James' close friend). As the story revealed, neither Mrs. Reynold nor Arnold were pleased with Richard's appearance, and later on, the woman instructed Jimmy to stay in the guest room and tell Richard it was his room, while adding that she and Arnold would be shamed if the truth about Jimmy's actual room and their financial situation came out. At some point, Jimmy learned that the family was able to take a trip to Hawaii, but at that moment, the wicked mother told her son to stay behind and look after the house (claiming that the place could be broken into if it was completely empty).
Reveal[]
Jimmy again acquiesced, and as the story progressed, he ended up making friends with a girl named Vivian (who was also his schoolmate) who often pulled pranks. Their friendship grew closer and closer, with Vivian noticing that Jimmy often overthought things. One weekend, the girl arrived at the boy's house, and it was during her visit that Jimmy revealed that he slept in the basement, much to Vivian's shock. After seeing that Jimmy was left home alone and living in his basement while his mother, stepfather and half-brother were off on a lavish vacation, Vivian concluded that Jimmy was being manipulated by his mother and stepfather, a claim the protagonist denied repeatedly. Jimmy's continuous denial drew anger from the girl, to the point that she told Jimmy that she couldn't be with him if he couldn't see the truth.
After Vivian stormed out of the house, Jimmy called Richard and asked about his parents, with Richard revealing that James' relationship with his future wife began 17 years prior, though within moments, the future Mrs. Reynold became pregnant at 22 years old. The couple decided to get married right after, with the woman being unhappy with the decision and with her unwanted son due to the fact that she wasn't ready to be a mother, leading to arguments between the couple.
When the rest of the family returned at home, Mrs. Reynold told Jimmy to clean the living room and do the dishes, only for the boy (as part of a test) to state that he was studying and asked if Archie could do the dishes, with his mother asking if her eldest son had gone mad in response. When Jimmy stated that he had done the dishes when he was her youngest son's age, his mother dismissed the statement and angrily repeated the order.
With that, Jimmy saw his mother's hypocrisy and realized that she was showering Archie with love and appreciation, but had never given those affections to him. Afterwards, Jimmy contacted Richard again, and it came with a revelation: the house that they were living in actually belonged to James, who left it to his son in his will. In addition, the man tasked his friend with sending money to his wife on a monthly business, which was meant for Jimmy's use. However, Mrs. Reynold turned heel by using her son's money for her own use (which included her trips to the movies and Hawaii with Arnold and Archie), while keeping the truth about Jimmy's money a secret and manipulating him into doing chores and sleeping in the basement.
Upon learning the truth about what Jimmy as going through, Richard represented the protagonist in an emancipation suit against his mother and stepfather, which resulted in his uncle figure becoming his legal guardian, while Jimmy regained control of his house. As the boy ejected his mother and stepfather out of his house, the evil Mrs. Reynold lashed out at her son for his decisions (claiming that she was his mother) only for Jimmy to admonish the villainess for deceiving him for years.
The story's epilogue revealed that Jimmy worked at his father's business in the years that passed, and also rekindled his relationship with Vivian; however, upon seeing his half-brother Archie, Jimmy was on the receiving end of verbal lashing from him, who accused his half-brother of being a troublemaker and ruining his family's life, revealing that callous woman had been manipulating her favourite son into vilifying her unwanted son.
