Karen Sorenson

The evil Karen Sorenson

Karen Sorenson (Lindsay Frost) was the main villainess from the 1998 film, Mind Games.

Backstory[]

Karen Sorenson's backstory revealed that she was the elder of two daughters born to Irene and Tom Sorenson, the latter being a noted deacon. In addition, it was revealed that both Karen and her younger sister, Anna Sorenson, were subjected to sexual abuse from Tom, with Irene covering up her husband's actions. However, while Anna despised Tom for his actions, Karen actually hated that Anna got more of the attention between the two, as she had developed an incestuous affinity towards her father.

In a jealous rage, Karen--then 18 years of age at the time--shot and killed both of her parents, while placing the gun in Tom's hand to set him up as the perpetrator of a murder-suicide. Karen managed to charm the police into believing the murder-suicide angle, though Anna had known the truth, but didn't come forward due to being threatened by Karen.

Karen eventually became a therapist, though she used her position to manipulate her patients, with one of them being a college student named Jeremy Hart. The film revealed that she engaged in sexual trysts with Jeremy and recorded them, and in the film's opening, the villainess ran down Jeremy and killed him, and later portrayed his death as a suicide. Afterwards, Karen served as a therapist for Hannah and Doug Berrick, who were concerned about their son, Luke; though Karen quickly decided to utilize her manipulative methods towards the couple.

Their first meeting saw Karen focus mainly on the couple's intimacy (or perceived lack thereof) rather than Luke, and during a solo session with Hannah, it was revealed that Hannah had engaged in a one-night stand with a local while on business in London. Karen informed Hannah that it would be best for her marriage if she came clean about her affair, which she does, causing an argument between the couple. When Doug went to see Karen about his wife's admission, however, the villainess claimed that she never told Hannah to tell him about the affair.

After convincing Hannah that she needed time away from Doug, Karen called Doug over for a private session, which saw the manipulative madwoman plant the idea in Doug's head that Amy, Doug and Hannah's daughter, wasn't Doug's child, as Hannah's affair happened before Amy was born. Doug lashed out at Karen for the suggestion, though the pair ended up engaging in an adulterous tryst. Later on, Karen presented her findings on the Berricks, a scathing report blaming Hannah for their problems and even suggesting that Hannah may become a maniacal villainess bent on harming her family, especially Luke and Amy. Karen's evil methods increased the couple's friction, though Hannah began to suspect Karen's true colors when the villainess visited the house one night and made suggestions that Doug was molesting Amy, causing an angry Hannah to eject Karen from the house.

Climax and Death[]

Later on, the evil Karen approached Luke as he was getting out of school, and manipulated him into believing that his parents would divorce and send him to a boarding school. Her words led to Luke starting a small fire in his room, with Doug and Hannah noticing and rescuing their children. Hannah's attempt to report Karen failed, and after the villainess taunted Hannah over the phone, Hannah snuck into Karen's home to find evidence of her villainous conduct. She discovered an article about Jeremy and played a video that showed Karen and Jeremy having sex; all the while, Karen took out a knife after hearing someone in the house, after which Hannah escaped.

During the film's climax, Hannah and Doug encountered Wexford, a retired cop who had been tracking Karen for a while, with the encounter leading the couple to Anna, who was living in a shack with her two children. The couple learned Karen's backstory from Anna, who continued to voice her refusal to come forward due to Karen threatening her. After Doug and Hannah left, Karen appeared at her sister's home and killed her, and afterwards, the maniacal villainess tracked the couple to a cabin, where their friend, Ben Bosco, had been watching Luke and Amy. As Doug and Hannah mended things, Karen snuck into the cabin and abducted Amy, with Luke calling his parents on the following morning and telling them about Karen and Amy.

As Amy cried for Hannah, Karen threatened to harm Hannah if she didn't quiet down, and as she was being approached by Doug and Hannah, the deranged villainess threatened to break Amy's neck if they moved closer. Karen later asked Hannah how it felt to lose something precious, and in response to the couple mentioning Anna and what their father did to them, the villainess accused Anna of hating their father, while also admitting to killing her sister. In addition, Karen revealed that she actually loved being molested by her father, as well as revealing her jealousy over Anna getting his attention before stating that she killed her father to take him away from Anna. Afterwards, Karen placed Amy in her car and drove off, though she later crashed her car into a tree.

Doug and Hannah raced to the burning car and managed to save Amy, and afterwards, Hannah attempted to drag Karen out of the car, only for Doug to take his wife away due to the fact that the car was about to explode. After the trio escaped, Karen was killed when her car exploded, and the film ended with a recorded message from Karen to her colleague, Richard Ryan, which indicated that her crash was a suicide attempt and also voiced her inability to understand families and love.
