Evil witch Elspeth Clewer

First fire, then death! So it shall always be, until my body is restored to me!
~ Elspeth Clewer's curse

Elspeth Clewer (Sarah Marshall; 1933-2014) was the main villainess from "God Grante She Lye Stille," episode 2.05 of Thriller (airdate October 23, 1961).

Elspeth Clewer was the descendant of main protagonist Lady Margaret Clewer (also played by Marshall), and it was revealed in the episode's opening that she was a witch and a vampire, with the scene showing her being executed in 1661. The villainess cackled and lashed out at her persecutors, after which she placed a curse on her female descendants, which stated that they would never have what she had lost: a woman's right to marry and bear children. Elspeth repeated her deranged chant, laughing maniacally as the flames consumed her.

300 years later (the episode's events), the evil Elspeth returned at Margaret's home and went after her, attempting to possess her so she could walk the earth once more. The villainess tormented her descendant throughout the episode, which included using Margaret's vessel to kill animals and drink their blood, and later attempting to kill Margaret's nurse (who survived). The ghostly witch made a last attempt to possess Margaret, who was later revealed to have a heart condition, with Margaret's screams being heard by Dr. Edward Stone and John Weatheford (the latter being a vicar). The pair rushed to Margaret's room and witnessed Elspeth leaving her descendant, who informed Stone that she had "won" before dying. As Weatherford explained, Margaret's death meant that Elspeth could no longer try to possess her, and the episode ended with the villainess returning to her grave.
