Maniacal villainess Angie Powell

Angie Powell (Tina Louise) is the main villainess from "The Deep End," episode 1.11 of Kraft Suspense Theatre (airdate January 2, 1964).

Introduction[]

Angie Powell is a secretary at a construction company owned by Sam Kimber, who was the revealed lover of a woman named Lucille Benton. The episode began with Lucille drowned by a mysterious scuba diver, leading to Lucille's twin sister, Barbara Sherwood, hiring private investigator Dan Walsh to investigate her death.

As for Angie, she made an impression on Walsh with her stoic personality, and the episode's progression revealed that Sam was hiding $250,000 of the company's money, with plans to fund his relationship with Lucille. Walsh met with Angie and talked about the relationship, with Angie claiming not to have any bitterness towards Lucille or romantic designs towards Sam.

Angie strangling Gus Hickman to death

I'm going to protect him for the rest of his life. That woman would be alive today if you hadn't been so sneaky. And you...you would have been alive...tomorrow.
~ Angie Powell revealing to Gus Hickman that she killed Lucille Benton, right before she killed Gus

After meeting with Walsh, Angie phoned Gus Hickman (the company's accountant) and arranged a meeting, which saw Gus learn Angie's knowledge of the money, after which Angie stated that she would have held the money for Sam. In addition, Angie informed Gus that she confronted Lucille regarding the money, stating that she lied to her and that she would protect Sam from Lucille--who she called "immoral"--and would continue to protect him for the rest of his life. Angie began turning heel with her statements, which revealed that she killed Lucille in the episode's opening, and after blaming Gus' investigation of the company's funds for her actions, Angie fully turned heel and strangled Gus to death before placing his body inside his car and putting it in drive, doing so to set up Gus' death as an auto accident.

Walsh became suspicious of Angie after learning about Gus' death, and the episode's climax saw Walsh devise a plan to trap the villainess, which had Barbara being sent to the office and posing as Sam's latest lover. The plan was for Walsh to work against Angie to test her deranged devotion, with the villainess glaring over seeing Barbara--mainly due to her resemblance to Lucille. Angie later phoned Walsh and arranged a meeting with him at the docks, which was the same place where she killed Lucille, and after Walsh's arrival, the evil Angie donned her scuba suit and attempted to drown Walsh, who was saved in the nick of time. As for Angie, the maniacal villainess ended up in a mental institution, continuing to voice her obsessive devotion to Sam.

Personality[]

  • Angie Powell, due to her limited screen time in the opening half of the episode, was merely introduced as a devoted secretary--though the latter half ultimately revealed her insane and obsessed demeanor. A clear motive for Angie's obsession with Sam was never revealed, though her murderous methods established Angie as a ruthless and lethal villainess.
  • She seems to enjoy scuba diving, since she uses this way to kill her victims.
